5th Grade Promotion, Thursday, June 13 at 9:30 a.m.
It's hard to believe, but promotion is less than a month away!
Students should arrive at school at the regular time and be already dressed for the big day. The teachers have several important activities planned in the classroom before the ceremony begins. The Promotion ceremony events will last the entire morning, and students will be dismissed at 12:40.
■ The Promotion Ceremony will be located on the EDP playground, and there will be plenty of seating for parents and friends. At 9:30, the program will start with a slide show of our students' years at Pacific School. Students will then present a program which is a dynamic mix of music and memories. Finally, students will receive their 5th grade promotion certificates.
■ A reception with a light brunch will be provided in the Pacific cafeteria following the program.
■ Students will have their traditional final "Walk Through the Halls of Pacific" at 12:15 before our 12:40 dismissal.
Recommended student attire: dresses, skirts, collared shirts (no logo t-shirts), nice pants or shorts. Students will be sitting on risers, so please wear bicycle shorts under dresses, especially if sitting in the front row. We discourage high-heel or high-platform shoes as we will be up-and-down and on-and-off the risers numerous times during the 1.5ish hour program. No hats please. We ask that students not wear leis or flowers during the program. If you wish to give your student flowers, please do so after the program.
Today we had a Disabilities Awareness Assembly based off curriculum from Changing Perspectives. Attached please find a parent letter and reflection questionnaire in order to have an open conversation with your child about the experience. If you have any questions about the assembly or the Changing Perspectives curriculum, please email Dani Ehrhard at email@example.com.

Mira Costa Denim Day
Mira Costa is participating in Denim Day 2019. Their student leaders are embracing this international movement, which you may read about here. They need denim to create some photo back drops and other things. DENIM donations are welcome by April 18th AND your child is encouraged to WEAR denim on Denim Day, April 24th, 2019. Healthy relationships may be described as: -Choosing to be with people that make you feel supported -Choosing friends that don’t pressure you to make unhealthy choices -Choosing to spend time with people that make you a better person -Being a good fiend to others -Being a positive role-model
Yearbook Love Lines
Make your 5th grader special by buying a Love Line. They can be purchased until April 10. Input needs to be send in that day as well. Parents place the orders using this link or via the website's homepage under the "STORE" tab. Contact Barbara van Leeuwen for more information.
A Message from Remind...
We’re sorry to write with disappointing news. Recently, we learned that Verizon will be charging Remind a new fee that makes it impossible for us to continue supporting free text messaging for anyone who has Verizon Wireless as their phone carrier. Please read on for all the important details—we promise to keep this as short as we can.
To offer our text messaging service free of charge, Remind has always paid for each text that our users receive or send. Now, Verizon is charging Remind an additional fee intended for companies that send spam over its network. Your Remind messages aren’t spam, but our efforts to resolve the issue with Verizon haven’t been successful.
As a result, the Verizon fee will increase our costs of providing text messaging by 11X—pushing our annual costs into the millions of dollars. This isn’t financially feasible for us to support, and it’s forcing us to end Remind text messaging for everyone who has a wireless plan with Verizon.
How will this affect you?
Beginning January 28, 2019, the people in your classes who normally get your Remind messages as texts will no longer receive these messages if they have Verizon Wireless as their phone carrier.
What can you do?
To make sure people in your classes continue receiving your messages, ask them to download the mobile app orenable email notifications—both of which are free of charge. Our team’s also working hard on a solution that allows your classes to continue to use Remind by text, and we’ll share more details with you before January 28.
In the meantime, we’ll keep fighting to make sure educators, students, and parents have access to effective communication. To do this, we need your help: If using Remind has made a positive impact in your classroom, at your school, or anywhere in between, please ask Verizon to reverse the fee here: www.remind.com/verizon-fee
We’re very grateful for your support, and we’ll be in touch soon with an update.
The Remind team
Griffith Observatory Resources
We came back from the break with a bang – literally, the Big Bang! Our field trip to the Griffith Observatory was a success! Despite LA traffic, we had a wonderful time and are able to connect MANY of the concepts presented during our tour with our space science STEMscope lessons. Here are directions for making your own comet and some additional space resources for enrichment activities at home.
Elementary Art Night
We are excited to welcome parents to the 1st Manhattan Beach Elementary Visual Arts Workshop. Join us and gain a sense of the elementary art standards and even put some pen, pencil, and maybe crayons to paper. All are welcome, as there are no previous art skills required, but we are limited to 50 participants. Thank you.
Welcome, Miss Kells!
Our guest teacher, Miss Kells, has officially joined our class and is getting to know our students and curriculum. She can be reached at firstname.lastname@example.org. Feel free to send her a warm welcome!
Griffith Observatory Field Trip
Our field trip will be on Thursday, January 10th. Students arrive at school at 7:30, and we will leave at 7:45. Students should bring a snack that can fit in their pocket, a sack lunch labeled with their name, and a drink. No electronics on the bus. No spending money. We will return to Pacific at 1:00 and have class and PE. No music on Thursday.
5th Grade Holiday Book Exchange
I’m excited to announce that on Thursday, December 20th, we will have our annual Book Exchange in Room 26. Please send your child to school with a new or gently used wrapped book for the exchange. We will have an old fashioned “Yankee Swap” in which the children draw names and each has a chance to either choose a book from the pile, or “steal” a book that has already been chosen. It’s great fun and everyone goes home with something new to read over the break!
Please be sure that your child brings a book that he or she feels someone would be excited to receive. This is not the time to clean out unwanted books that might not be of interest to anyone. It is ok to send books that may be more likely to appeal to either boys or girls. This is usually sorted out during the “stealing” process. Additionally, students can always trade their books at the end of the game.
Thanks in advance for your help with this fun Room 26 tradition!

It was so nice to hear joys range from the art lesson, to the get to know you search, to reconnecting with old friends and making new ones. ❤ I can tell already that we are going to have a great year!
Here are some follow-ups to our first day together:
Welcome to 5th grade!
